Write a Bond Theme
Books are getting more and more interactive, with their publishers utilising the web to connect to a new audience. One of the latest is a promotion for a new James Bond book, written by Sebastian Faulkes, published later this year. It’s not the book of the film, a Quantum of Solace, but a brand new story called Devil May Care, which gets published on may 28th. To help promote it, Penguin are running a competition on MySpace, to write a theme for the audio book.
Penguin have obviously been questioned about the use of MySpace, hence their reply:
The question has already been asked - why MySpace? Is Penguin ignoring Bond’s original audience, in their attempt to be too down with the kids? I don’t believe so. And MySpace isn’t just for the kids these days, anyway. We thought long and hard about what we could offer to Bond fans and would-be Bond fans online, given that there is already so much out there. We don’t believe in building websites for the sake of it. Partnering with MySpace gives us a chance to bring Bond – the original Bond as Ian Fleming created him – to a whole new audience.
They’re right, social networks are not ‘just for kids’ but cover all ages. MySpace, being the one of the more accessible sites, is probably the right choice - you don’t have to be a member to see the page, unlike with Facebook.
The competition is pretty straight forward - create a new theme, up to 5 minutes, with no content from the films (different rights!) and using dialogue from one of the audio book tracks they have uploaded. Listen to track one - you can see that Flemming definitely liked his alcohol, that passage is basically drink porn. The top 5 chosen by a panel will then be voted on by you. The winner will get their theme on the audio book, win a thousand pounds and have their music made available for download; although you don’t grant the copyright of your composition to the publishers, you do have to give them a perpetual, exclusive licence for the track, which amounts to the same thing, so not that much different to competitions where the want to own everything.
