Want Respect? Sex Education and Condoms
I’ve really enjoyed my time in the US and looking forward to getting back here, but there are somethings that are really just so different that I can’t grasp. The attitude to sex education is one of them. I know that the UK can’t stand up proudly when it comes to success of reducing teen pregnancy, but where education is done, it tends to be done in a more realistic manner that the US one, which appears to be more of a ‘just say no’ approach. Whatever the merits of each programme, you can guarantee that you would never ever get anything quite like the following video from the US government. Produced by 20:20 London on behalf of the Office of Central Information, it tries to connect with young teenage boys about safe sex. The YT video has a low level of views at the momentbut the MySpace page seems to be a better place, where they have utilised the technology of putting text in video - add you name and see where it ends up. There’s a code you can use to share ‘your’ version of it. The campaign is supported by lots of music broadcasters and DJs, so they have the right ‘hero’ factor. Wonder what the focus groups said?
