It’s not a product video but it’s number 1 on the list for views last week and I love it. It’s the video for Pork and Beans, the new song from Wheezer. Showing an understanding of how to create buzz and commentary on the web that many brands can learn from, the video refers to many of the internet famous people that have had hits on the video sites. I bet that some brand will try to copy this soon - which is not the lesson to learn.
The second video on the list is for Guitar Hero 4, but in this case they’ve disabled embedding, an action I fail to understand. It’s pointless, it does not stop people copying it (there’s been 5 copies posted in the last 12 hours), it just makes the brand seem a little mean. Although given the popularity of the clip, it’s not stopped viewers.
There’s no other product videos in the list, which, outside of the soft porn, is dominated by American Idol, Eurovision and the occasional clip of the Champions’ League final.
One of the main ads running (I guess it’s geotargeted) is a competition to ask the UK Prime Minister something. The Downing St Channel has been there for just over a year but has done nothing over the last 6 months. Now they’re ramping it up, posting some videos of visits and speeches and asking you to submit your questions and then vote on them before he answers at the end of June. This is a copy of what the Leader of the Opposition David Cameron, has been doing for ages on his site
