Sport Relief 2008
It’s UK Sport Relief in 10 days time, the bi-annual money raising event that alternates with Comic Relief. The money raised goes to charities in the UK and Africa.
They’re being pretty heavily supported on the BBC (it’s not really advertising) and on commercial TV by the big sponsors involved, such as Sainsburys.
They are encouraging you to run either 1, 3 or 6 miles - getting sponsored for it of course - or if you’re not up to that, at least buy a pair of the socks.
The assets provided - flat, animated or flash banners, print ads, logos, press kits, fundraising kits etc is a superb set of assets that brands should take note of. If you want people to promote you, provide the tools in an easy way. The forum on the site is not currently well trafficked, but I’m guessing that may change as people start doing things.
They’ve also got a few celebrities involved in doing sporty things, which generates a lot of PR, especially when things go wrong! James Cracknell, rowing Olympian, is in the middle of his version of the triathlon, which includes rowing the channel, cycling from Calais to Gibraltar and then swimming across the straits there to Africa. Falling in 200m into the row generated a few column inches. I like the partnership they have with Nokia to track his progress, with an N82 being used to send a positional information back to the site and being used to send images and video.
As a charity, the Comic Relief/Sport Relief team have been doing this for a while and are organised at rolling out the publicity machine every year, but they always manage to incorporate new stuff as the digital world changes and add more and more stuff for people to get involved online.
