Nokia, N-Gage and Free Fifa08 licences

by Rachel on August 21st, 2008

The Idea

To promote their gaming platform N-Gage, which is found now more on their smartphones instead of a standalone device, Nokia are giving away free licences for Fifa 08 for those of you in the UK.

To help promote both the platform and the giveaway, they’ve been busy filming stuff on the Tube, “a series of CCTV-style films documenting the amusingly absorbing effect of mobile FIFA 08. ”

Shot undercover on London’s tube network, each of these videos captures the bemused reactions of passengers witnessing a man so engrossed in his game that he does anything in order to avoid any disruption to his match. The aim of these short films is to drive viewers to www.n-gage.com/fifa08, a CCTV-bank-style site where you can watch any of these six videos at your leisure. From here you can download N-Gage, buy a Nokia N95 8gb or, if you already have the N-Gage application on your mobile, go straight to download your free FIFA 08 license.

What do I think?

I’m enjoying the videos and they do show how ‘engaging’ the game can be; of course, the opposite reading of that is how annoying someone playing the game could be to the people around them, it’s a fine line. Ewan, my go-to person for all things Nokia, says the platform is getting better but that they’ve been pushing this ‘deal’ for a year. This is yet another stage in Nokia’s push to get the platform out there, this seems to be a different tack they are taking with the same business objective - get people playing the game and they’ll buy more. The videos went up a week ago and they are now moving onto the major outreach programme, with them appearing on a fair few blogs over the last few days. (the early appearance of the videos I see as a good time, having been pushed too often into getting videos up there and starting pushing at the same time, without checking the videos are actually working!). The videos have had a low viewing rate so far, so we;llk see over the next couple of weeks how effective the agency outreach has been.

The Pitch

Slightly annoying in the the email feels too polished to me, too PR-y with phrases that you would rarely say in an email. The content overall is good despite the tone, with plenty of links, including one to a page full of assets - which unfortunately was not working when I tried it,, so can’t tell you what they had put up there. Also annoying was a ‘not for publication’ statement’ about who the email was from and how they abide to WOMMA etc….errr, why? Don’t Nokia like people knowing who’s doing the PR?
