NFL Superbowl Commercial

by Rachel on January 9th, 2007

A few months ago the NFL in the US announced their competition for fans to define a commercial that would run during the Superbowl, the annual end of season competition that still has one of the largest TV audiences. Previously, I’ve not been too supportive of the idea with the restrictions and rules surrounding it, but there are a lot of fans out there who wanted to get involved. Over the last few weeks, voting has taken place on the final 12 pitches, which you can hear here. The winning entry just may be turned into a commercial, we just need to wait and see.

Using brand fans to ideate and create the advertising has been an increasing trend over the last year or so. The increasing ease of use of video and sound editing in the average PC opens the doors to many people to be creative. No one has gone all out and asked for a full campaign idea yet, it’s been restricted to one-offs, supporting an event such as the Superbowl or working from an existing idea. And I don’t think it will go that far - the wisdom of the crowds does not apply in these situations.

Update: the winner has been announced: it’s Gino Bona, a business development director for a marketing firm. Over 1700 people turned up at the casting days to do their pitch.
