Me and My Goldfish

by Rachel on January 20th, 2008

There’s some interesting posters around London, on the Underground and such like, which tell a story, or at least the start of one. They’re all about Goldfish and by well-known people. They point you towards Me and My Goldfish, whilst having a small picture of the Goldfish credit card in the corner, just the slightest bit of product.

On the site are the stories, from people such as Ranulph Fiennes and Meera Syal. The stories are available as text, audio and video, allowing everyone their preference.

The branding on the site is again subtle, with an invitation to look at their main site. The key interest for me is in the What Happens Next section, a whole list of event over the next few months associated with literacy. Lectures and festivals and Storytelling week.the oppotunity to create stories and encourage reading. Not quite sure of the brand link to Goldfish, of the benefits that fit, but no matter. They are promoting reading so fair play to them.

I think this is the tiny little exception to the received wisdom that people no longer read copy.

If you’re writing entirely to entertain, they’ll read you.

If you’re banging on about product features and benfits (which 99.7% of copy is), they’ll turn the page.

They are fun to read, in the right place which is where I have a few moments just waiting. They’re also intriguing; I’ve seen other comments about them saying they caught people’s eyes. A good ad I think

I was interested today to see a Goldfish poster near my house, with a credit card in the bottom lefthand corner, bearing my name. Should I draw any conclusions from this??

Alex, you’re on the one in the paper as well. Either the whole company is trying to tell you something or you now have a reason to collect all the examples and show people how famous you are.
