Led Zeppelin and Mothership
I would have to meet that Led Zeppelin have never really being on my music radar, so the release of a new album and a tour are not necessarily that interesting to me. But I am liking some of the marketing they are doing around the release.
They’ve teamed up with netdisaster.com to give you a way to zeppelise your site, complete with music. Have multiple zeppelins crash land and destroy a site of your choice.
There’s a fan-run site that is tracking the news about the release, the promotion and the new gig. This is an ‘official’ site as it was put together by fan Ian Ochiltree following a request from Rubber Republic. You can get news, such as for the latest Facebook app they have, and possibly win tickets. They’re also trying to create a googlebomb (even though Google do work to prevent these) using the term ‘What’s on God’s iPod?‘, a little bit of hubris to get behind.
Given the history of Led Zeppelin, I’m not sure if all of these actions will increase the sales, pushing the album outside the core fans, but the record seems to be doing pretty well, entering the charts at No. 7 in the UK. It gives fans the chance to get more involved with the promotion, so that they can do some selling as well. Overall, I like the activities.
