Gas Store TV contest

by Rachel on June 5th, 2008

The Idea

I never bought gas in the US and have not bought petrol here in the UK for at least 2 years, maybe longer, so I had no idea that anything like this exists. There a Gas Station TV station! Putting TV at the pumps and in-store, they deliver programming and advertisements to a pretty captive audience. There’s “exclusive news and entertainment content from CBS, sports from ESPN, and local weather” and it’s all Neilson monitored, so fits in with the metrics that advertisers are used to. The shows are on 5000 screens in 400 cities, so it has a wide reach, even if people only catch glimpses of the content, but they say they have 30million a month.

Over the past months they’ve been running a contest to find a new star, someone who is going to have a presenting job on the station. They got 300 videos, 8000 entries into the sweepstakes and 70k page views (actually not a bad activation rate). Now they’re in the final stages, the over to you voting bit, which is running until the end of June, over at Be a Broadcast Star

What I think of it

I got over my astonishment of Gas Station TV!!!!! and then took a look at the idea. It’s not new, but it’s in a new place and looks to be a better prize than many that are offered in these competitions, a chance to get some broadcasting experience. According to the press release, they were very pleased with the quality of the content submitted. I’d offer my opinion on this, but my interest ground to a halt when I went to look at the site. I can’t view the videos without giving all my details, such as email, phone number and home address. No thank you. Too many barriers to me to vote - I need to see the videos before I decide whether the value exchange is enough for me to give you details for you to market further to me. There is a bribe to doing so though, as you get a chance to enter into a draw for $10k. But I’m thinking you are asking too much of the viewers.

The Pitch

The Pitch started off well, with a note from Airfoil PR referring to previous posts that were relevant to this competition. It then tailed off, as it went on to be a standard press release. Lots of information but where’s the additional images or content I can use. I’m not even able to add a screenshot of the site as I’m not prepared to give my details out. So good try, but the product failed for me. A C in my rating.
