FT 5 top advertising videos of 2007

by Rachel on December 14th, 2007

The FT have a run down of the biggest advertising videos of 2007, as measured by views. I’m not sure of the numbers are those direct from YouTube or have been provied by agencies/brands. I had a little, tiny bit to do with the Smirnoff one ;) I’m not going to embed them all here (I think I’ve mentioned many of the already, just going to say why I like them.

1. Cadbury’s Gorilla. Fun, unexpected, re-watchable. Remixable.
2. Smirnoff Green Tea Partay - an unusual follow up to a previous success. It was fascinating watching the development process for this and how they pushed the views.
3. Ray-Ban Catching Sunglasses. Real Life tricks, no special effects. Caught the eye and engendered copycats.
4. Will it Blend iPhone. Great consistency in presentation, increasing return audience over months. then you throw in Apple’s iPhone and then the majority of geeks just cringe.
5. Lynx/Axe Boom Chicka Wah. Sexy Girls on video. Just hits home for many.

Looking across all 5, there’s no single hook, no one reason why they took off. Two are TV ads put online, 2 are made specially for the web as brand supporters, one is a major part to a marketing strategy that is not supported by much else but has still increases sales. Two have hot girls, aiming for the sex angle, one has a man in a lab coat. But they all catch the imagination in different ways, getting wanting to copy and talk about and that is the key.
