Freeday Friday - Are you ‘aving it off?

by Rachel on February 20th, 2008

This may be parochial in viewpoint, but I’d challenge anyone to say something like that video could be made anywhere else except the UK. It’s got that weird sense of humour that I rarely see in another country.

The starting point of the story is the Leap Year, with 29th Feb falling on a Friday. If you work you don’t get paid for the extra day and it’s not covered in your holiday allowance; now there’s a campaign to get the day as a free day off for everyone over at Freeday Friday. There’s only a low level of interest a tthe moment, but it’s got time to spread. There’s a Facebook group (and an Orkut one, which I’ve not seen before). The site provides you with tools to share the idea with the world and also asks you what you would do with the free day. Some of my favourites:

Tantric sex. Cheese on toast for lunch.
renting some dogs and going to the park.
Spending the morning try to breach the Pentagon’s firewall and the afternoon in the pub.

The people behind it appear to be the digital agency Naked Penguin Boy (nice name! - there has to be a story behind that) and Sell Sell, another agency. No product to sell, no cause to push, just a weird idea they’ve had some fun with. It’s also a good way of trying out all these new social media tools without having to sell it to a client, a way to test and have some fun doing it without actually having to meet targets.

So what would you do with your Freeday Friday?

I think that its a brilliant idea.

We all know that we don’t get enough public holidays!

It is a bit unfair that we don’t get paid to work on leap years, so who shouldn’t get the day off???

If I got Freeday Friday off, have a lie in - lord knows I could do with one of those!
