Coors Light Lip Sync Rocks

The Campaign

Coors Light have a new UK ad that launches next Friday on TV but in the meantime you can see it on YouTube. They’re also running a competition in association with the ad campaign. Take the rap from the ad, download the song, produce a video with you lip syncing to the music. Load it up to YouTube and if you’re picked by the judging panel you get to be voted on by the public at the Coors site. The grand prize is a weeks skiing for 4 in the US next winter, with 2nd and 3rd prizes being a years supply of Coors Light. Reading the rules, it appears that you may also get a chance to be videoed at promotions in bars/pubs which could have the makings of a good, funny night out!

They’ve been loading up some example videos, such as this one. (Why do i get the feeling looking at the videos that the agency asked for ‘volunteers’?

What do I think of it?

The ad has English people rapping in the middle of the snow, which for me is mildly out of place but does fit in well with the contest, where I think half the fun will be embarrassing videos of English people pretending to rap. But it does fit in with the brand and how they are marketing it in the UK. The addition of what appears to be a live, promotional element ads a welcome extension to the idea of make your own video, getting venues involved and making it part of an event (an assumption based on the rules). They’ve gone down the non-customer friendly route of claiming copyright for the videos that are uploaded, despite the website itself being very friendly and easy to use with things like the Practice Booth being a thoughtful extension to the idea, allowing you to play around with the song first along with the How To advice to get you started. They need to finish the QA though, as they have 2 versions of the Rules up on the T&C pages ;) No idea what the MySpace page is like, another part of the campaign, as it’s not yet up but I’ll take a look at that later

The Pitch

Good email, lots of links, Jaz from ShinyRedTV has done a good job here. The campaign is not quite fully published yet, with the MySpace page still been done up, but this is acknowledged in the email that they are working on it and this is about getting the ad out there. A B+ from me.
