Canon EOS and The Assignment

by Rachel on April 30th, 2008

I love my Canon Cameras - I’ve had 3 of them. I currently use the Rebel XT EOS and the PowershotSD1000 and I love both of them. The Canon emails are one of the few product emails that I read, so when I got one about the new ESO model, the 450D, I read it and clicked through. To be honest, I’m not going to buy this as I’ve still got plenty of use of the ones I have, but it’s a new shiny gadget and I can drool can’t I? I was most interesting in this experience as promised in the mail:

On the website you will see how these great features can help you make the most of great photo opportunities. Choose one of 2 fun-loving photographers and follow their journey around town or in the great outdoors to fantastic locations and take dramatic and interesting shots.

I’m not the best at taking photographs and would like to learn more. But where is it? Something that is called out in the mail is not sitting there on the page ready for me to click on. The camera information is great but the email led me to expect more and now I’m disappointed. As marketers, you have to deliver on what you promise and it does not appear to be done here.

One great thing in the email is the contest though - The Assignment. That’s more like it, a EU wide contest to win equipment and a great chance to win a trip to a Euro 2008 football match with the chance to be a photographer there. At the start, it’s the usual thing - load your photo up and then vote for your favourites. The top 10 in each country get put to the jury to choose the best. Then it gets complicated - the jury choose the best in each category and county and they win camera equipment. The two best in each category then get chosen and they win a trip to Austria/Euro08, to take more photos. The photos from that trip then get reviewed and the best in each category gets to go on the ‘Assignment’ to somewhere on the world with a leading photographer. It’s complicated, but sounds a great prize. They’re not even wanting the rights to the photos entered, just a worldwide licence, which is better than a lot of photography contests. I’d enter, but by the look of the quality in the gallery I’ve got no chance.
