Bankcard and Oyster Card

by Rachel on November 28th, 2007

One of the things I saw pushed last week over in London was the combined Barclaycard and Oystercard.

All purpose card

This is a combined credit card, cashless contact card and payment card for traveling around on public transport. Something similar has been running in New York for the last year or so, with Citi Bank/Mastercard, although you need a separate key fob for this to work. Interestingly, there is a line or 2 about the NY system working with the phone but I can find little information about that. This system is only on trial, due to finish at the end of the year, and no word yet whether it will be extended.

The London system is not a trial and is fully rolled out. It looks like they are also teaming up with Nokia and O2 to trial a phone based system next year, with a 1000 people getting a free phone with built in RFID technology to play with for a while. As well as the transport system, the micropayments work in around 1000 shops.

Moving towards a phone based payment system opens up many possibilities. With the phone knowing where it is, you can start to ‘direct mail’ customers through SMS/MMS, providing useful offers when they are in the area. The offers can be read in the same way the ‘cash’ portion is, via the RFID, rather than what is being doing at the moment with codes/barcodes.
