Australian eBayers kidnap Santa
Adrants point you to a new campaign for the Australian version of eBay, where 3 eBayers have decided to kidnap Santa and hold him until their ransom demands are met - the demands beingthat you should not be held hostage by retailers but should pay less for your Christmas presents by using eBay. Some nice little touches:
- daily videos - but how long are they going to keep it up? There’s apparently 43 eBay shopping days until Christmas. (By the way, does anyone else think the Santa could only be an Australian Santa? No way could he be a US or UK version)
- The ability to send a message and get it put on the site ticker. I’m the one that says Tickle him with Tinsel!
- Daily poles, which look like the influence the next day’s video
- A kidnappers diary, talking about how well they are treating him
- Ads promoting sales on the site, with average prices for typical presents. Being from the northern hemisphere I was a bit thrown by the bikini, but I suppose it makes as much sense as the typical hat and gloves set you see promoted as a present ;)
- Ways to explain to the kids why Santa has been kidnapped and won’t be visiting them - such as blaming the loss of the North Pole and his home on global warming, or the reality of this just being a marketing gimmick and he will be back in time! Nothing like inoculating them early to marketing.
Not too bad at all - well worth taking a look. They’re advertising the campaign on the main site and I guess they have advertising banners scattered around elsewhere as well. I’d love to know if they are doing a poster campaign, as that worked well in the US for Windorphins - anyone got any news?
