Add to a film and meet Michael Moore

by Rachel on May 21st, 2008

The Idea

Erik Luchauer and Kevin Antoine, two Knoxville, Tennessee, brothers-in-law have created Rootclip, a collaborative fim experiment. They’ve started off with a film clip, setting up a mystery and invite you to contribute 1 minute chapters to the story. After each round, the submissions are voted on by you, the winning clip becoming the next part of the story for you to build on. The Grand Prize winner gets a trip to the Traverse Film Festival in Michigan and a meeting with Michael Moore.

What I think about it

As a creative idea, I like it, it gets people involved in the story and looks like it is building into a fun exercise for the people involved. From a marketing perspective, there have been plenty of similar ideas, such as Google asking you to film an envelope passing by or the Nike kicking footballs around the world. But these are all pretty simple films to make, here, you have to write the story. The closest marketing example would be Where are the Joneses, where the story and plot was developed collaboratively.

The Pitch

The Pitch was a straightforward email, offering me the chance to chat to the originators, nothing outstanding about it in either a positive or negative way.
