2007 Contagious Things

by Rachel on January 5th, 2008

Contagious have released their report of the most Contagious things of 2007. One of them is Where are the Joneses?, which I wrote about last year.

Episodes are posted daily, with a variety of web 2.0 worthy ways for viewers and collaborators to get involved. The series follows Dawn and Ian, daughter and son of a prolific sperm donor, on their quest around Europe finding a potentially infinite number of siblings. Episodes are hosted at www.wherearethejoneses.com where comments can be posted to the blog, or for the more intrepid, a wiki site allows would be script writers to add, remove and edit content online, in a giant user-generated, collaborative project. Flickr, Twitter, MySpace and Facebook all provide access points to the story and characters, as well as blogs on Wordpress.

It was all done in partnership with Ford, who provided the challenge, the money and the car but had a pretty much hands off role. For me, this is a leading example of what can be done with online tools and where customers can get involved in a story.

Through writing about this, I got to meet David, one of the people behind the plan. He’s wrote about the difficulties of working with the press on this project, who really, really did not get most of what was being done, being stuck in a a mindset of banner ads and TV

Industry reviews of the Joneses project for Ford of Europe, on the whole, we’re a bit rubbish, especially the ‘experts’ at NMA. They made me reminded me how lazy the press can be (”awwwwwww, we want a press release weeks in advance and be the first to know.” “What’s a Wiki? Does it have banner adverts?” “So, like, it’s a TV show?” “Twitter, wassat?” “Nah, I don’t think our readers would be interested in the Creative Commons thingy. No one understands media rights, right?”). Sigh.
